PLUMBING

Do-It-Yourself

Prevent drainage clogs
While hair and soap will end up in your drains no matter what you do, there are precautions that can help reduce drain blockages:

  • Avoid pouring grease and solid materials down drains as much as possible.
  • Install strainers on tubs and sinks. Be sure to clean them regularly.
  • Use recommended chemicals to unclog drains and pipes sparingly. They can often be corrosive and overuse can cause more harm then help.
  • Flush drainage systems a few times a year to help push debris and buildup out of your system.

Check your hot water heater
Ensure that your hot water heater is properly insulated. Heat loss through your pipes and heater can cost you extra money every month. Also, the temperature of water coming from your sink should not exceed 120 degrees, to reduce the chance of scalding. The recommended minimum temperature of your hot water heater is 130 degrees, but anywhere in the 130 to 140 should be fine.

Troubleshooting

Problem: How can I unclog my bathtub or shower?
Solution:
A simple tactic for unclogging drains which may be blocked by soap build-up or hair is to run a hose through it. Simply remove any plating or strainers, and then send the hose down until it is stopped by the blockage. Tightly seal off the rest of the drain and turn the water on to push the blockage out of the pipe.
